The project was implemented when the hotel façade project got complicated and cannot be completed due to heat from the chimney of the Hotel's steam boiler. This affected the durability of the new facade ALPOLIC panel cladding. The first option was to re-insulate the chimney but it was more expensive. The team thought of a more viable solution using engineering techniques - the installation of new heat pumps.

The project started last Feb. 11, 2020 but its completion was delayed due to strict restrictions due to pandemic. The project was completed last October 18, 2020.

Heat Pump is an equipment that transfers heat from a cold area to a hot area by using mechanical energy, as in a refrigerator or air conditioner. In our case, our heat pump transfer heat from cold water to hot water. Heat pump is also a cooling and / or heating equipment. This is how it works.

The above photo is simple refrigeration cycle. In air conditioner and refrigerator / freezer, it is the "evaporator" that supplies cool air to a certain room or an equipment while in heat pump,it is the "condenser" that transfer heat.

  • Once the hot water temperature in calorifier drops to 460C, the heat pump circulating pump (HPCP) will automatically run to supply the hot water from the calorifier to the heat pump.
  • The flow of the hot water from the HPCP will trigger to auto start the operation of the heat pump.
  • Hot water will be preheated by the condenser coil of the heat pump.
  • Once the hot water temperature in calorifier reach to 500C, the heat pump circulating pump and the heat pump will auto stop its operation.
  • The back-up heat pump automatically start whenever the hot water temperature drops from 460C. This is to supplement the lead heat pump in preheating the hot water.

This year as the heat pumps are fully operational in supplying hot water in guestrooms and lockers, we only ordered and purchased 10,000 liters of diesel fuel twice, which was last February and July only. Before when we still using the steam from the boiler to generate hot water, we ordered and purchased 10,000 liters of diesel fuel monthly. The operation of the heat pump does not have an adverse on our daily/monthly electrical consumption.

There has been an obvious reduction of energy since the heat pump was implemented (see attached computation) The attached computation is based on the current economic situation wherein we implemented to operate the steam boiler since last year in 5 hour operation / day which is 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in evening just to supply hot water to the guestrooms from L-6 to L-15. The total computed consumption of diesel fuel by an operating boiler with in 5 hours /day  is 14,749.18 liters from Oct. 18, 2020 to July 4, 2021. The actual cost was only Php355,612.53.
But if we will base on the regular operation of the boiler which was 18 hours daily. The estimated consumption of the boiler or reduce energy will be 80,369.156 liters of diesel fuel.

The heat pump project generated a Php 1.9M savings.

ESTIMATED DIESEL SAVINGS IN USING HEAT PUMP January 2021 to June 2021

ESTIMATED DIESEL SAVINGS IN USING HEAT PUMP
JANUARY 2021 TO JUNE 2021
Month NUMBER OF LITERS PRICE/LITERS AMOUNT
January 10,181.95 30.61 Php 311,669.49
February 9,198.60 30.61 Php281,507.93
March 10,181.95 30.61 Php311,669.49
April 9,853.50 30.61 Php301,615.63
May 10,181.95 34.17 Php347,917.23
June 9,853.50 34.17 Php336,694.09
Total Saving     Php1,891,073.865

The estimated diesel fuel saving is based on the average daily consumption of the  0 Bhp Steam Boiler  during pre-pandemic or 2019 steam boiler daily diesel fuel consumption.
Daily operation is from 4:00am to 11:00pm and  w/ an average daily consumption of 328.45 liters of diesel fuel.
During this year (2019), we usually ordered a 10,000 liters of diesel fuel in a monthly basis. However this year, we only ordered diesel fuel twice.

  • January 11, 2021 - 9,000 liters
  • May 23,2021 - 10,000 liters
