Robinsons GenSan Conducts Plastic Collection Drive During Earth Hour
On March 23, Robinsons GenSan dimmed mall interiors to signify its official participation in the biggest hour for the earth – the Earth Hour. A global, annual initiative by the World Wildlife Fun for Nature, Earth Hour invites supporters to switch off their non-essential electric lights from 8:30 to 9:30 PM to show symbolic support for the planet and raise awareness of the environmental issues affecting our shared home. This year, over 180 countries and territories collectively contributed over 1.4 million hours, making this year’s Earth Hour the biggest hour for earth yet.
Robinsons GenSan kicked off its Earth Hour celebration with a ceremonial 60-minute power shut-off attended by Robinsons GenSan Mall Manager Leomabell Velandria; Allan Marcilla, City ENRO Head; Hon. Councilor Virginia Llido, Chairperson of the Committee on Climate Change Adaptation and Environment; and Councilor Elizabeth Bagonoc, Gen. Santos City LGU. At exactly half past eight, guests gathered around the installation of candle lights forming “60+” – Earth Hour’s key visual and stood still to witness lights go off in various areas in the mall premises. While a digital timer lead the countdown, percussion artists from Singing Kalilintad Cultural Performing Arts group performed indigenous beats that honored mother nature.
Apart from the 60-minute power shut off, Robinsons GenSan promoted green lifestyle and circularity through “Fun Biking at the Mall”, which rewards the first 50 bikers who will present their registered RMalls+ App with freebies; and a recycling drive dubbed as “Save the Planet, One Bottle at a Time”, which allows the public to exchange 1 kilo of dry PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles for 1kg of rice. At the end of the activity, the mall collected 760 bottles deposited by Earth Hour supporters, which tops in-situ collections across all Robinsons Malls nationwide.
Robinsons Malls’ GenSan’s participation in the Earth Hour global movement is an initiative under Robinsons Malls’ RHope, a campaign featuring the malls’ nationwide efforts at environmental sustainability. RHope’s programs strategically contribute to Robinsons Land Corporation’s advocacy of achieving Net Zero carbon emission by cutting GHG and adopting solid waste management, among other efforts.
